scrivener Posted 25 May , 2015 Share Posted 25 May , 2015 In researching for next book, I'm looking for descriptions of WWI naval life through the eyes of young ratings, not officers. Anyone know of any that have details? Thanks for any help. Scrivener.

Dust Jacket Collector Posted 26 May , 2015 Share Posted 26 May , 2015 What about Charles Morgan's 'The Gunroom' whose publication was apparently restricted due to its giving an overly realistic account of life below decks?

Guest KaptAdm4 Posted 31 May , 2015 Share Posted 31 May , 2015 I have read the book War, Mutiny and Revolution in the German Navy, written by Ordinary Seaman Richard Stumpf. It is his war diary, written throughout his duty cycle on board the battleships SMS Helgoland, Wittelsbach and Lothringen during the Great War. After personal interviews and committee scrutiny, in 1928 his dairy was incorporated into the findings of the Reichstag Investigating Committee. I do not want to overstate its importance, but I believe Richard Stumpf's war diary represented the only eye-witness experiences by an ordinary sailor to be recorded into German naval history of WWI. James A Pratt III Posted 1 June , 2015 Share Posted 1 June , 2015 I think there was mentioned on this site a memoir written by a sailor who was on the HMS Achilles when she sank the raider leopard.
James A Pratt III Posted 9 June , 2015 Share Posted 9 June , 2015 Not a OR but a Midshipman "Scrimgeour's Small Scribbling diary 1914-1916' Alexander Scrimgeour he served on the HMS Crescent, Alsatian and Invincible where he was killed at jutland when the ship was sunk. The review in Warship 2010 mentions the crew of the Crescent was at one time on a diet of salt pork and ship's biscuit.
