His Medal Index Card should confirm if he got MM or not.

From the Army Service Numbers website: "C/ prefix men were also New Army men joining the 16th to 21st Battalions."

If he was in the 16th KRRC (and I can't see any battalion in his MIC or Roll(s) or SWB record), there are several vivid pages of that battalion's war diary on Ancestry relating to the attack on High Wood on the 15th July. And on July 30th there was a brigade parade where General Laundon(?) of the 33rd Division presented military medals - "11 awarded to 16th KRR, 9 men presented". It might have taken until October to be Gazetted..

He was later 30155 Northamptonshire Regt. and the medal roll for the Northamptonshire Regt. confirms he was formerly 16th Bn. K.R.R.C. (discharged from Northants. R. 5.2.1918)

The transfer to the Northamptonshire Regiment would have taken place about October 1916. I am fairly certain it would have been in the UK to 3rd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment at Chatham. He was transferred to Class P Army Reserve soon thereafter on 28 November 1916. He would therefore have been very unlikely to have served overseas with the Northamptons and the medal roll in fact doesn't show a battalion with the Northamptonshire Regiment. His silver war badge roll shows that he enlisted on 19 September 1914 and his medal card and 1914-15 Star roll shows first service overseas from 16 November 1915 in F&F (with the original contingent of the 16th K.R.R.C. as noted above, of course).

16/KRRC were awarded 34 MM's between landing in Nov 1915 and the end of 1916.

2 were awarded in Jan 1916 to named men, neither T Brown. 11 were awarded for the High Wood actions in July 1916, but a further 11 for the August attack on Tea Trench. Unfortunately none of these 22 MM's are named in any of my KRRC sources.

Brown is named 29th out of 34 in the battalion's KRRC Chronicle MM list, which is not alphabetical and has the two Jan 1916 MM winners as 1st and 2nd. The group of men after Brown received their MM's in Dec 1916, so the list *may* be in order of award, but I must stress this can only be conjectural without some further lead.

The other main action of the battalion was the attack on Hazy Trench in November, which is later than Brown's MM LG citation in Oct 1916, so we can rule that out.

His C/209 Service Number strongly suggests (>95%) he would be an original Church Lads Brigade volunteer. If you know whereabouts Brown came from, you may be able to get further by contacting the CLB Historical Group. An MM award has a reasonable chance of being recorded in the CLB newsletters.

Cheers,

Mark

Harris and Raggett were awarded MMs in Jan 16 for rescue work in the trenches. Then three others - Harley, Ansell and Rhodes - do not know when. There were 11 MMs for the action at High Wood - Grundy, Crook, Skelton, Snelling, Peach, Beament, Watson, Malina, Greenhalgh, Jones W, Ball. Other for Jones P P. Then 11 more, possibly for a big attack in August - Poxon, Elmes, Hallam, Sewell, Geary, Welch, Mountrey, Maurice, Hodgson, Smith, Wootten. War Diary for 11/11/16 records MMs for Trowsdale, Jeffrey, Scott, Brown, Williams. Then another for Wigglesworth. Thirty four medals awarded for 1916.

Trowsdale, Jeffrey, Scott and Maurice were presented with MMs on 3/1/17. There was another presentation on 9/1/17 but no names. Seems Brown was in Northamptonshire Regt by then. Can tell you Brown was in A Company. Johnny Conn

Sorry Pals, but the CLCGB is re-organising their website and this link doesn't work. They're doing Beta testing with their "Live" website - not normally recommended! - once it settles down, I'll find out where the Historical Group pages have moved to and update the links here.
