Coldstreamer Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Hello Can anyone find this chap on the census returns please George Denis RUGGLES - born approx 1878 in Sudbury, Suffolk I found him on the 1911 (more a fluke as he was a guest and it didnt record his first name but confirmed rank and regiment) 1901 he was in South Africa Below are family members - thinking maybe his father was a soldier and abroad ? cheers Details taken from his service papers
Ellis1918 Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Don't know if you have seen his attestation papers on Ancestry - 5 June 1897 a 19 years 2 months old barman enlisted Hounslow CG's service number
TEW Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Was a bit intrigued by 'Mrs King' who is not one of the sisters. Anyway, Denis & Ellen are Kings on the 1891 census and not Ruggles. Daisy & Reuben also present which helps confirm as does address of 8 Hospital Yard, next door to service record address. 8 children in all !!! George R King also present born c1876 Suffolk - Sudbury - Dist 7 - page 4 of 24 Still don't know who Mrs King is but perhaps you're not interested in her.? TEW Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 (edited) There is a birth registered to George Denis Ruggles in 1896, Sudbury, Suffolk. Possibly your man's son??? The other children on the service record list all seem to have births registered as King in Sudbury, Suffolk. There is a George Ruggles who was born c1877 and died in Sudbury 6th June 1966, probate to James Bertie Ruggles. Still looking at 1881. TEW 1881 = Suffolk - Sudbury St Gregory - Dist 10 - page 10 of 40 Denis, Ellen, George Martha and Jonathin King at 36 Gregory St, Sudbury. NB 'Mrs King' lived at No 32 on service record. tootrock Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Ellen Ruggles married Denis King in 1878. Perhaps George was illegitimate, born before the marriage. Martin
TEW Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Looks like Denis King married Ellen Spring Ruggles 1878 in Sudbury. George probably born out of Wedlock, or Ellen was a second wife and not the older children's mother. Odd for him and siblings to take on mother's maiden name. He certainly attested as George Denis Ruggles as was his Boer service. TEW
tootrock Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 A Denis King died in Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1913, aged 67, so that is presumably his (step) father. Presumably the Mrs King was added to the records as next-of-kin at this time. Martin
TEW Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Step-father makes sense. No sign of a previous marriage of Ellen Ruggles to anyone. She was born 1850 Sudbury as Ellen Ruggles. Perhaps she had children with Mr X out of wedlock and Mr King stepped into the arrangment? TEW

TEW Posted 22 May , 2015 Share Posted 22 May , 2015 Yes, one of those 'complex' families. At least you have the info from 1881 and 1891 as requested. Denis King seems to be in Sudbury for 1911 census and was widowed with two children from his marriage. Those two children were born mid 1880s. Perhaps Denis and Ellen had sown their oats before meeting or had children with each other before marriage or unofficially adopted a stray child. No sign of a birth registerd for George Denis either as King or Ruggles. TEW
