seaJane Posted 19 May , 2015 Share Posted 19 May , 2015 Morning all! Any thoughts on this picture? All I know is, one of them is David Revell Bedell-Sievright [sp.??], the naval surgeon with the medical unit of the RND who died at Gallipoli. Sorry about the lack of clarity - it's a photograph of a print-out of the original. One of these days I'll ask a colleague to track down the original again! sJ
johnboy Posted 19 May , 2015 Share Posted 19 May , 2015 Possibly Scotland if the badge fits? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bedell-Sivright
Stoppage Drill Posted 19 May , 2015 Share Posted 19 May , 2015 England, 1914 XV, taken prior to the Calcutta Cup match, so Sivright won't be in this pic. 5 men in this pic were destined to be killed in action. Donald Poulton-Palmer, Bungy Watson, Alf Maynard, Frank Oakley and Mud Dingle. Six of their Scottish opponents were also killed.

Still playing in their club socks then. They still were in 1921, but not in 1937, when they were wearing "England" socks- Navy blue with white tops. seaJane Posted 19 May , 2015 Author Share Posted 19 May , 2015 Thanks very much gentlemen. So ... if Sivright isn't in this picture, I wonder why it's in our archive? ... were any of the others naval surgeons, I wonder.

seaJane Posted 19 May , 2015 Author Share Posted 19 May , 2015 Aha! Thank you very much. James Henry Digby Watson, M.B. - http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/3050330/WATSON,%20JAMES%20HENRY%20DIGBY%20M%20B, I presume. I'll see if there's an obituary in the Journal of the RN Medical Service. He was lost when HMS HAWKE was torpedoed, October 15, 1915: http://www.naval-history.net/WW1Book-RN1a.htm sJ

daggers Posted 20 May , 2015 Share Posted 20 May , 2015 Points of order: Poulton was Ronald, not Donald. #3 Was W.J.A. Davies a Welshman? He played often enough for England. #10 D
