Dear Members

I am trying to research my Gt Granddad via Ancestry and other web sites, however it is proving to be extremely difficult for me. Any help would be much appreciated. The information i have comes from his marriage certificate.

David O'Connor (born South Dublin) abt 1885

Lived in Sheffield during the war, however could have been in Dublin before the start.

Serv No: 91462 (Gunner)

Royal Field Artillery

10th Divisional Column

Many Thanks for looking.

Hi,

Just had a look on free Ancestry Medal Index Cards and see 1914/15 Star entry for Driver 941 D O'Connor RFA.

Could this be your man?

May be more info on the actual Medal Roll or other Ancestry Indices but I am not an Ancestry member so can take matters no further.

Regards

Steve Y

The number 91462 appears to have been handed to a man joining No. 5 Depot RFA, Athlone, around September 9, 1914. So, yes, this would be most likely if he was in Dublin at the time. The 10th Division moved to England in May 1915.

Hi David, thank you for the information. I was told that some records were destroyed during WW2 and that is the reason some soldiers records are hard to find, do you know if this is the case? Many thanks Steve

Here is a photo of some of the gunners of the 10th Divisional artillery at Basingstoke in May 1915:

The 10th Divisional Artillery were formed at Kildare and Newbridge Barracks with 55th Brigade (175, 176 and 177 batteries) at Newbridge and 56th Brigade (178, 179 and 180 batteries) at Kildare in late 1914 and early 1915.
