Hi,

I am researching family history and am trying to trace an Alfred Skinner who married Matilda Carey in the RC Church in Dublin on 1st February 1921. On the marriage certificate his address was given as Wellington Barracks, South Circular Road, Dublin. His Rank or Profession was given as "Soldier".

I have tried to locate his service record but I don't know what regiment was serving in this barracks in Feb 1921. Can anyone help me or point me to where I can find out?

Wellington Barracks was the first barracks to be handed over to the new Irish Free State in April 1922.

Thank you in advance

Joe

From 1920-22 Wellington Barracks, Dublin, was garrisoned by the 1st. Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. They had relieved their own 3rd Battalion who had been stationed there from 1919.

There would have also been RAMC personnel based in the Barracks .

Thanks Dave for that info. It should help a lot.

BTW, That was RAMC?

RAMC = Royal Army Medical Corps. They provided medical services for the men in the barracks.

Hi. Now I am even more confused. I have found one (of the many) medal card for Alfred Skinner of The Sth Lancashire Regiment which I will try to attach. There is no Service Number entered! Why is that?

I've also got an AF Skinner who was a Private, Service number 7496 of the RAMC, in the 2nd Field Ambulance. He was awarded the Military Medal as reported in the London Gazette, issue 1405, 13/06/1919, page 7692.

Can you explain the details enteren on his medal card. please.

I do not know anything else about Alfred other than he married matilda in 1921

Please help!

Joe

There is no service number because the man on the card is an officer. He however cannot be your man as the card indicates that he was Killed in Action in 1916.

There is an added 'complication' in that there would be no medical card for the man you are looking for if he did not serve overseas because he would have no medal entitlement.

What details are on his marriage certificate with regards to his age and his parentage?

Hi Dave, Alfred Skinner was of "Full Age" and his father's name was given also as Alfred Skinner who was a "Painter".

As the man said "That's all she wrote".

Thanks Dave. You are a fountain of knowledge.
