I would appreciate anyone that has information on the actions that the Royal Camel Corp took part in in World War I. My grandfather only spoke about the war on one afternoon and his experiences were very interesting. I remember him mentioning that he had tea and crumpets with Laurence of Arabia, and that he'd rather sneaking up on the Germans at night rather than the Turks because the Germans had proper latrine setup.

He wasn't very fond of his camel; he referred to the camels as dirty boogers. My grandfather sent home a number of souvenirs. He said that the soldiers would trade cigarettes for souvenirs that the Turkish prisoners made. One was a book with pressed flowers from the Holy Land. Others were an artillery shell transformed into a British military cap, a beaded snake that had Turkish prisoners on it, and a beaded beer bottle that had my uncle's initials. I also have a number of pictures of the Royal Camel Corp pulling canons, troops bathing in the Nile. I will attach to this post a picture of my grandfather and some of the souvenirs. The photos I will have to scan if anyone is interested.

Hi

Thanks for posting the images.

My uncle, a Driver in the Notts RHA, brought back a few mementoes of his service in Egypt, Palestine and Syria Feb 1916 to July 1919.

One of them is a beautifully carved square box - I have attached an image of the lid.

It is remarkably similar to the one in your post and I wonder if it, too, was carved by a Turkish POW.

The contents of the box remain as when my uncle brought it back, a quantity of Arabic inscribed coins

Thanks for posting

Mate you are in luck as there former commander of the 8th Company wrote two books about the British Camel Corps and should be still around somewhere?

He was Geoffrey Herbert Elloit Inchbald

Reading them should give you an idea what they were up to.

If you need more let me know.

Cheers

S.B
