Mates,

I wonder if your interest falls into this area of the Russian Army?

I am trying to piece together the Russian Forces used in the operations against the Turkish 3rd Army during Nov - Dec 1914.

What I have;

39th Infantry Div

1st Caucasus Cossack Div (Gen Baratov)

1 Caucasus Mortar Bn

1 Caucasus Sapper Bn

Can you confirm that what I have is correct and add the names of missing General officers who commanded these formations?

Also I am still trying to fit in these two Bdes?

Interesting area of very neglected area of research, but can't help - except just to note that archaeological fieldworkers in the areas involved in the campaign have noted visible evidence of trenches and cartridge cases.

Mate,

Yes an area missing in the study of the war.

The Russian invasion started in Nov 1914 but went quiet unit 1916 other then minor actions around Van during 1915.

I did wonder why the Russians didn't help more during the Gallipoli fighting by advancing to draw Turkish units away from there.

After the almost destruction of the 3rd Turkish Army at Sarikamis Dec 1914 was allowed to reform and remained idle until Jan 1916.

Of cause the Russian Army after that battle was just as knocked around, but could they have done more to help the Allies?

Cheers

There is a fine book on this campaign called Caucasian Battlefields 1828-1921" I must points out the Russians were not idle from December 1914 to January 1916.

Mate,

" Russians were not idle from December 1914 to January 1916"

As I stated there were minor actions around Van during 1915 by a Russian Corps helped by the so called rebellion by the locals.

The loss of Van drawn the Turkish forces but only a few as the fighting around Van Lake went on but died out soon after.

Most Turkish troops around Van Lake either disbanded or went south to fight the British in Iraq by the end on 1915.

As stated minor actions by few Troops both Russian and Turkish.

Some say if not for the rebellion in Van the Russians would not have pushed on to capture that City (April - May 1915).
