midshipmanrayley Posted 11 May , 2015 Posted 11 May , 2015 William Stolworthy, 1881-1914 born in Great Yarmouth and a pre-war professional soldier. Served as serjeant L/5881 1st battalion Queen's Regiment, died 31st October 1914. (His brother Thomas Stolworthy has a separate topic). Only just discovered William although I knew about his brother. Can any member please help me with details of his service? Currently in Spain and cannot bring up his CWGC details or any papers he might have.

Verrico2009 Posted 11 May , 2015 Posted 11 May , 2015 Do you know how old your man was? It's a long shot and probably not relevant, but there's a William John Stolworthy who enlisted at Great Yarmouth in 1890 aged 17 years 1 month with papers on FMP. He was 1226 with Norfolk Artillery. He rose to the rank of Sergeant, was re-engaged in 1904 and was discharged time served in 1908. http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fwo96%2f1414%2f1668397

Verrico2009 Posted 11 May , 2015 Posted 11 May , 2015 Definitely not William John - they were both in the Boer War. Name: William Stolworthy Campaign or Service: South Africa - Second Boer War Service Date: 1899-1902 Service Location: South Africa Regiment or Unit Name: 2nd Battalion The Queen's Regimental Number: 5881
midshipmanrayley Posted 12 May , 2015 Author Posted 12 May , 2015 Many thanks Bob and Verrico. Suspected he was married although not that he was a Boer War veteran. John
David_Underdown Posted 13 May , 2015 Posted 13 May , 2015 http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.co.uk/2009/06/east-surrey-regiment-1st-2nd-battalions.html has 5806 enlisting 13/1/1899 and 6271 on 30/1/1900. Given the Boer War it seems likely he was fairly well towards the beginning of that date range.
