Remembered Today:

Need Help In Interpreting WD Broad Arrow Marking

Recommended Posts

I just acquired a jacket with the following inspection markings stamped on the lining:

93

WɅD

M

Does anyone know which venue the "M" refers to?

At one point Joe Sweeney had most of these sorted out, but I cannot find the thread. Regretfully Joe is not here to answer.

Would be grateful for help on this or a pointer to the appropriate thread.

It's Marylebone (in London).

Cheers,

GT.

Most appreciated, GT. Any idea what type of facility was at Marylebone?

Mike

This is the thread I believe you're thinking of:

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=189331&hl=pimlico

I struggled to find it, as spelling Marylebone correctly apparently eluded Joe, but Pimlico did not :poppy:

Good find Andrew: I'm beginning to wonder if/ how we could compile those kind of threads. Look at the Boots one in Misc, which links to one of his, for instance. Especially now that Classics has been scrapped.

Otherwise, more and more of this detail is going to become shrouded in the mists of time.

I'm told his run of Militaria articles is up-to-date and there are no more to come. He had started on 'the book' - myself and a couple of others I know of hold perhaps half a dozen draft chapters, sent for review (grammar etc, not content) - yet it's hard to see how they can be brought to life now.

It's all a great shame.

Regards,

GT.

Perhaps, we should propose a "Joe Sweeney Materials" subforum in the Documents Repository forum as a place to capture links to Joe's threads and any other research materials associated with Joe before, as you say, they become "shrouded in the mists of time."

Thoughts on this?.

What is perhaps needed is to pin such threads to the top of the relevant section as is common on other forums.

How do we do that, Jerry? Do we contact the moderators? We would have to solicit nominations for threads in this category from forum members.

Yes, on many other forums the mods notice threads that are of particular value or act on pm's sent to them and pin them or make them a sticky so they can be found easily because they are always at the top of the relevant section. It depends on the mods here and also if the software allows it to be done.

Hello,

Just as an extension to the question, I have heard it said that post war, the letter and number were swapped around so that the initial was above the arrow, and the numeral(s) below. Can anyone confirm this, and if correct, when this change took place?

Many thanks,

Owain
