algy Posted 9 May , 2015 Share Posted 9 May , 2015 I have a number of trench maps that have abreviations pencilled in in blue and I am struggling to decipher them, typically they are - RAP's,BP, ADS,FADS, BC etc and if there are any others I am likely to come across perhaps someone could enlighten me please. Thanks, algy.
Ron Clifton Posted 9 May , 2015 Share Posted 9 May , 2015 RAP = Regimental Aid Post (where the battalion medics were based) ADS = Advanced Dressing Station (set up by the divisional medical units) Not sure about the others, but FADS could be Field Ambulance Dressing Station. Andy Wade Posted 10 May , 2015 Share Posted 10 May , 2015 BC could be Battery Commander? The Long, Long Trail - Common British Military AbbreviationsBP... Could the P mean 'Post'? I've heard of abbreviations like CP for Command Post and FOP for Forward Observation Post.

I've heard of abbreviations like CP for Command Post and FOP for Forward Observation Post. I would go along with P meaning Post, or possibly Point, but I think battery commanders (and battery captains, the 2i/cs) moved about a bit too much to have their positions marked on a map! B is probably Battery or Battalion. What is the scale of the map? - some maps were used mainly by artillery, so Battery would be more likely in that case. Chris Henschke Posted 10 May , 2015 Share Posted 10 May , 2015 If BP is noted on the same maps as the RAP and ADS, it may signify a Bearer Post, i.e., a relay post for stretcher bearers. When you say that you have a number of trench maps, it doesn't help because the scale and probable use of the map needs to be considered. Are routes marked linking the RAP with BC and later ADS, for example? Otherwise, it is pointless to speculate. Scans would help.
