bmac Posted 21 November , 2005 Share Posted 21 November , 2005 John, On 27th March a special reserve brigade was formed of the 1/5th Cheshires, the 416th, 512th and 513th Field Coys RE, No 176 Tunnelling Coy and the 56th Division Employment Coy. On the night of the 27th they took up positions supporting the infantry. The Cheshires were split between Railway Post, Chester Post, Ridge Post and the southern end of the Brown Line, which were north, east and south of Bailleul. At 4 AM on the 28th the German bombardment opened followed by an infantry attack which was generally repulsed. On the night of the 28th, the two platoons of B Coy, 1/5th Cheshires at Chester Post (N of Bailleul) reinforced the London Scottish in the front line. Nofurther attacks developed and the 56th Division was relieved on the night of the 29th/30th by the 4th Canadian Division. 1/5th Cheshires casualties were: Capt E S Heron and 15 ORs killed, 30 ORs wounded.
