Insight into the Northamptonshire Regiment

Hi Folks

I haven't done a great deal of research on the Northamptonshire Regimen, with the Regimental Warpath site still down I'm running blind and I'm hoping someone here can shed some light for me.

I've done the ususal trawl through Ancestry and Find my Past records without success and am looking to find out what I can about Percy Jarvis. I know he was a 2nd Lt and was in both Salonika and Cambrai where he was injured. I'm guessing from the former he was in the 1st Garrison Battalion but the latter suggests 5th or 7th Bn so I'd appreciate any information people can shed light on.

This is the officer called Percy William Jarvis I have found who served with the Northamptonshire Regiment.

He is listed as P.W. Jarvis and can be found in the medal rolls on Ancestry here: http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/5119/41629_636897_11255-00098/6133766?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2f%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3findiv%3d1%26db%3dIWOServiceMedalAwardRolls%26gss%3dangs-d%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln%3djarvis%26_F00061C3%3dnorthamptonshire%26MSAV%3d0%26uidh%3dx33%26pcat%3d39%26fh%3d20%26h%3d6133766%26recoff%3d7%26ml_rpos%3d21&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord#?imageId=41629_636897_11255-00098

His medal card is here indicating service in both the Northamptonshire and Hampshire Regiments: http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/1262/30850_A000836-00802/3839994?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2f%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3findiv%3d1%26db%3dMedalRolls%26gss%3dangs-d%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln%3djarvis%26_F00061C3%3dnorthamptonshire%26MSAV%3d0%26uidh%3dx33%26pcat%3d39%26fh%3d22%26h%3d3839994%26recoff%3d11%26ml_rpos%3d23&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord

He was commissioned as a temporary Second Lieutenant from 11 November 1914.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28969/page/9139

In December 1914 he was serving with the 8th (2nd Reserve) Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment (Army List, January 1915). The same applies in May 1915 (Army List, June 1915), January 1916 (Army List, February 1916), June 1916 (Army List, July 1916) and August 1916 (Army List, September 1916).

The 8th Battalion was disbanded (actually converted into a non-Regimental Training Reserve Battalion in September 1916, hence the transfer of many of its officers to other Regiments.

Second Lieutenant Jarvis was transferred to the Hampshire Regiment in September 1916 (retaining his date of Seniority of 11 November 1914):

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29768/supplement/9470

Promoted to Lieutenant in the Hampshire Regiment on 13 December 1916:

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29954/page/1778

Relinquished commission on completion of service on 31 January 1919:

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/32161/supplement/12283

I don't believe that he served overseas with a battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment. Salonika would suggest the 10th or 12th Battalions of the Hampshire Regiment.

Steve.

Well done Steve, I had little luck with my searches on the London Gazette (other than the first of your entries) but you have really filled in the gaps.

Many thanks to one and all, another superb reply that we've come to expect around here. The detail is going towards a book out later this year to educate the people around here of the many and varied things that happened to local men and women during the Great War with proceeds to going to the local British Legion so I'll add their thanks as well.
