David B Posted 2 May , 2015 Share Posted 2 May , 2015 An acquaintance recently visited Shorncliffe military cemetery at Folkestone and noticed a grave stone with the inscription A soldier of the great war, known only to god. Under what circumstances could that happen seeing that the death probably occurred at the nearby military hospital after the soldier was transported back to UK. abbrover Posted 2 May , 2015 Share Posted 2 May , 2015 CWGC says the unknown soldier is WW2 and there is also a Polish National. Doesn't seem to be any other details about him
Kitchener's Bugle Posted 2 May , 2015 Share Posted 2 May , 2015 It is likely an administrative gaff.....he was likely injured and was being brought back hospital in the Uk when he either died on the crossing or just as he arrived back in Folkestone. His papers and id may have been misplaced.
David B Posted 2 May , 2015 Author Share Posted 2 May , 2015 Many thanks for both of those prompt replies. Seems like an open and shut case.
