Dalcassian Posted 29 April , 2015 Share Posted 29 April , 2015 Hi, I have been researching my uncle's career in the RIF 1910-1918. He was Albert Condon 10559. I would like to know where I can access the War Diaries of the 2nd Battalion from the time they were in Quetta, India in 1914 to his injury in Egypt in Nov 1917. He was discharged about March 1918. Thanks in advance Joe
David_Underdown Posted 29 April , 2015 Share Posted 29 April , 2015 There are three parts to it due to the three theatres of war in which the battalion was employed. The first is available online as WO 95/2266/5 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353484 - this is described as running Dec 1914 - Oct 1915, but there may be info on their journey from India, essentially the diary starts with their entry into France though. Next is WO 95/4895 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7360839 which has not yet been digitised so can only be seen onsite at The National Archives, Kew. This covers Oct 1915 - Nov 1916 for it's service in Salonika. Finally (again not yet digitised) WO 95/4585 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7359296 for the Egyptian service. Dalcassian Posted 5 May , 2015 Author Share Posted 5 May , 2015 Thank you for the information and links provided. I have bought first file and it makes very interesting reading. Have requested an estimate for a paper copy of last file. Thanks again
sotonmate Posted 5 May , 2015 Share Posted 5 May , 2015 D No War Diary for India. His Silver War Badge entry shows enlistment on 9 Dec 1910 and discharge to wounds, aged 26,on 28 Aug 1918. Badge number 445783. The Egypt/Palestine War Diary covers 2 years and may be rather a large cost estimate ! If it is just a read of some of the pages in the month or two prior to his injury let me have a PM here by May 12 and I will see what I can do on my visit to Kew that week. If you are unaware the PM is sent by clicking on my name to the left of this message and selecting the message option on the next screen.
