sandybee49 Posted 29 April , 2015 Share Posted 29 April , 2015 Hi All, Wondering if some-one may be able to help with the following: An Australian soldier Frank John Scott 278 was killed on 8-10-1917 or 18-10-1917 both dates appear in records, the names we have seen mentioned are Celtic Wood, near Ypres & buried near Spoilbank His service records state - No. of Grave Buried - Cemetery B3033 - Name of clergyman B4359 but that is all. Can anyone suggest how we may find what cemetery?? Cheers sandybee49
rksimpson Posted 29 April , 2015 Share Posted 29 April , 2015 Hi CWGC has no grave - http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1600953/SCOTT,%20FRANK%20JOHN He may have well been buried initially, and the grave was subsequently destroyed by further fighting in the area. Looking at his records - page 10 says body not recovered and a report of an unofficial burial near where he fought. It sounds like he was killed, buried where fell with a marker, which was subsequently destroyed. Shells made a big mess! regards Robert
IPT Posted 29 April , 2015 Share Posted 29 April , 2015 There are number of witness statements in the Australian Red Cross Inquiry file - http://static.awm.gov.au/images/collection/pdf/RCDIG1056514--1-.pdf At least three state that Scott was later recovered and buried. One says he was buried 3-4 Km from Spoil Bank by a Lt Paxton and another says in a British Cemetery at La Kroule, nr Hazebrouck. Intriguingly, Scott's brother seems to have had full knowledge of his burial details but there is no copy of any response to a request for details from him. Hi IPT & rkirb5 Thanks for replying, the brother Cleve James SCOTT knew of the whereabouts of his brothers burial, but he was killed on 22-7-1918 and is buried at La Kroule, nr Hazebrouck. Both boys names are on the same headstone at La Kroule, nr Hazebrouck. but are definitely not buried together. Being able to work out what / where Cemetery B3033 is, I guess will give the answer.
