I am researching 2 men from my Local memorial of Connah's Quay and Shotton, two names are on the memorial, namely Edward CATTON, who I cannot find any information on, except for a soldier who enlisted in Leicester and who died and is buried in Leicester, in 1916, and Edward YATES, who died in 1918 : -

Commonwealth War Graves Commmission

CATTON

Initials: E

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Lance Corporal

Regiment/Service: Leicestershire Regiment

Unit Text: 4th Bn.

Date of Death: 15/04/1916

Service No: 2295

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: II. 177.

Cemetery: LEICESTER (GILROES) CEMETERY - I do not believe this is the right man as my Edward Y. CATTON was living at 26, Kirby Grove in Shotton on the 1911 census with his mother Lydia CATTON, (formerly YATES), married to Isaac CATTON in 1899. My Edward CATTON was born circa 1896, so I believe that he took the name CATTON, when his mother married.

YATES

Initials: E

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Lancashire Fusiliers

Unit Text: 2nd Bn.

Age: 22

Date of Death: 24/07/1918

Service No: 40679

Additional information: Son of Mrs. L. Williams, of 26, Kirby Grove, Shotton, Chester.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: F. 15.

Cemetery: GONNEHEM BRITISH CEMETERY

I believe that Lydia married again to a Thomas WILLIAMS after Isaac died in 1917 in the same year of Isaas'c death, and he too lost a son Edward WILLIAMS, and when the CWGC took details he gave his address, as Yes - you've guessed it 26, Kirby Grove, Shotton.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

WILLIAMS, EDWARD

Rank: Private

Service No: 1053

Date of Death: 22/09/1915

Age: 24

Regiment/Service: Royal Welsh Fusiliers "C" Coy. 5th Bn.

Grave Reference: Sp. Mem. 55.

Cemetery: HILL 10 CEMETERY

Additional Information: Son of Thomas Williams, of 26, Kirby Grove, Shotton, Flints.

I need to prove that Edward CATTON is the same man as Edward YATES, but cannot find any Army Records for Edward CATTON, which I hoped would have a remarks such as "AKA YATES" in there somewhere.

Assuming that you have checked for a soldier's will, I would try looking at the Registers of Soldiers' Effects for both possible names to see if the names to whom the "effects" were sent match anyone you have found. In the one or two cases I have seen, the name of a remarried mother with a different surname is given in full - at least forename and surname.

I agree that 2295 is not your man. He appears to have been born in Leicester c1895.

Possibly your man was known as Edward (Yates) Catton locally, but served under his official name of Yates. He could then have been erroneously recorded twice on the memorial.

Thank you RM and IPT, I have looked at the Leicester Registers of Soldier's Effects and the names don't gel, my friend found some family details on

http://www.leicestershirewarmemorials.co.uk/war/casualty/view/2494but I cannot find Edward YATES Effects, nor can I find his Will. I agree IPT that he was known by two names, just wish I could find "AKA Yates or CATTON" somewhere to confirm. Thanks again, Mavis

Yates is under Yater! (Ancestry index and writing on the register are a bit grim!)

Sole Legatee: Mother, Lydia Williams.
