There is a derogatory term REMF or similar. I think maybe rear echelon dog and such is what I am looking for.

How far back so that one's occupation became a subject of derision?

'Base wallahs' was one description of non-combatant personnel in the Great War.

To someone in the front line in a listening post, Battalion HQ is rear. The transport lines further Gback again. Someone on a course in etaples even further back and with some lucky s)d on leave in the UK. Each wishing to be the one in the UK but all the same unit and could end up in that front sap at any time.

According to the war diary of the 5AustBGROcoy the initials "ROD" (Railway Operating Division painted on locomotives)were interpreted by some soldiers to mean "Right out of Danger"

I ask because I was watching a documentary about AH yesterday evening and there was mentioned some soldiers considered him, a battalion runner, a "rear echelon dog". I noticed the same comments in a recent book about AH although some of the historians yesterday indicate that was usual for front line troops to consider anyone not in the front lines to be rear echelon. I suppose it could also mean he was political in terms of working the system and seniors.
