Both sides in the Great War East Africa Campaign maximised use of their railways, but the Germans lost control of their full-gauge lines in 1916.

However they continued to satisfactorily use narrow-gauge tramways until their final days in German East Africa.

The Indian Railway Corps (a title only adopted towards the end of its time in theatre) performed extremely useful work for the Allies in East Africa, and many wounded men must have been thankful for the swift arrival of a railhead as they advanced into German East Africa.

Yes and many of them were Anglo-Indians who were later treated with a shameful degree of snobbishness, as neither fish nor fowl.

Great article Harry - very interesting.
