Remembered Today:

My Gt Uncle Charlie

Recommended Posts

Only just discovered that Ancestry have the war diaries on site, reading the entries appertaining to my Gt Uncle it reads " Enemy trench mortars were active between 10.30 and 11.00 and 3.30 and 4.00 pm. Casualties 3 killed and 4 wounded" and Uncle Charlie was one of the three who are all buried side by side in Tancrez Farm Cemetery. Always rumoured that he died by trench mortar fire but very strange to actually see it in writing, weird.

Yes, fascinating to see family lore come true! It's often held in low regard.

I also recently stumbled on the war diaries on Ancestry. Having been a member for a while now I don't recall any fanfare, but good on them! There are problems - for instance the 2nd East Lancs diaries start at July 1916 and and it's been difficult locating my great uncle's time through the 8th Division diaries.. I somehow doubt Ancestry will tidy up the diaries at battalion level...
