Remembering my grandfather, Robert Lang, Pte 37091, 'B' Coy, 14th Battalion Highland Light Infantry.

My grandfather and 11 comrades-in-arms were killed on 24th April, 1917, while serving with the 14th Bn, Highland Light Infantry.

His comrades are:

24995, Pte, Bourke John, 20

42825, Pte, Dodds Wm., 23

29001, Cpl, Livingston Thos., 20

11158, Sgt, Michie Murdo J., 28

31133, Pte, McCreadie John Walker, 32

42644, Pte, McLean William, 27

28990, Pte, Ogilvie Alexander., 20

1931, Pte, Redmond Alexander., 30

42826, Pte, Screen George, 39

28771, Pte, Taylor Donald, 19

25193, Pte, Thomson Peter, 22

The 14th Bn HLI were the Support Battalion to the 13th East Surrey Regiment in the attack on Villers-Plouich, France.

My grandfather was age 23 at the time of his death.

In a letter to my grandmother, Company Commander Captain William Alexander Gibb Stevenson wrote:

"... Your husband was one of six orderlies who were asked for from my company to act as Brigade runners the night before the attack took place & so far as I can discover he was killed outright by a shell before our first wave went forward....".

My grandfather is buried beside Sgt 11158 Murdoch John Michie (see attached).

Rabbie Burns, in Tam O' Shanter (1790) wrote:

Hi tom


Have been researching the men from Stonehouse and note that Robert was married to Sarah from Stonehouse. Can you advise if they lived in Stonehouse for any time. They were Married in Stonehouse. dont have a lot of information was wondering if you have any additional info
