This man was in the Royal Marines Artillery and rose up through the ranks ended up as a Captain and Director of Music. The photo also shows medal ribbons. So it may be post WWI. However he did get a medal or medals pre war. Can anybody tell me the rank in the photo? It was taken by J.Brandebourg, 28 Elm Grove Southsea, if that helps date it. I have put a better larger picture in the Gallery under the section Men and Women of the Great War under his name

If you have his name I can look him up in the Navy List.

His cap badge is the bullion, silver and gilt badge of an RMA officer 1903-1922. His bandmaster rank badge may be on his left sleeve and obscured.

"In 1897 Bernard Steven Green, Bandmaster of the Duke of York's Royal Military School for Boys, joined the RMA ..." [as Bandmaster - served from 1897-1919].

"In 1914 an Order-in-Council allowed two Musical Directors and the two senior Bandmasters were to receive the appointments automatically. They were Honorary Major GJ Miller of Portsmouth Division RMLI and Honorary Lieutenant BS Green of the RMA. Frmo this date Musical Directors were to be eligible for promotion to Captain after ten years commissioned service and to Major after fifteen years"

"During First World War, in 1917, Green took the Band of the RMA to France to entertain the troops. On 14 November it was announced that Lieutenant Benjamin S Green, Director of Music had been placed on the supernumerary list where he would remain until the end of the war, or shortly after, when he would retire. He was due to retire on 31 October 1919 but this was post-dated until the arrival of his successor. ... The handover and retirement actually took place on 17 December 1919 although Green's retirement was ante-dated to 14 May 1916."

[The above quotations from "The Royal Marines Band Service -Volume 2" (John Ambler)]

His WW1 medals were issued in the rank of Captain.

I would guess the picture shows him as Director of Music RMA, so post-1914.
