Corporal Chris Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 I am currently researching a local casualty with a number of units to his name. CWGC and SDGW both show him as Loyal North Lancs. SDGW also shows him as formerly Lancers of the Line whilst his MIC does not mention the Lancers but has Liverpool Reg as the first entry above LNL. I have not come across Lancers of the Line before. Does it mean he was in a holding unit ready to be sent to whichever lancer/cavalry regiment needed reinforcing or was it a unit in its own right? Regards, Chris. Steven Broomfield Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 "Lancers of the Line" was a generic enlistment into cavalry, and specifically Lancers (as opposed to Hussars or Dragoons). Not a regiment, but a general repository for all men enlisted to Lancer regiments.
Corporal Chris Posted 24 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 24 April , 2015 Steven, Many thanks. I thought that was the likely explanation. Chris
Steven Broomfield Posted 24 April , 2015 Share Posted 24 April , 2015 I suspect his initial enlistment was into the cavalry but he was transferred into the King's (Liverpool) regiment before going overseas, and then into the Loyals.
Corporal Chris Posted 27 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 27 April , 2015 Many thanks. I'll work on that premise. Regards, Chris
