Guest Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 Hello All, I am having a look at Medal Rolls and spotted the person I am researching was part of the 1/7th Royal Warwickshire before going to the 1/6th Royal Warwickshire. Did the man physically service with the regiment to have this regiment included in the medal rolls cards. I have the war diaries for both battalions and the 1/7th is very detailed listing incoming men but I cannot seem to spot a Nichols. Does a man have to physically service with a regiment to have it inclued on this card.

Not always - a man could be allocated to a battalion in France and then be transferred again before he actually joined them (quite common if a man was at base depot in France waiting to be dispatched to a battalion. Guest Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 Thanks for the clarification. Having looked at the war diary I guess Henry was sent straight to the 1/6th Warwickshire. Cheers for the clarification. Just made me wonder after seeing both these regiments on the card.
Guest Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 I think the answer is yes, he served overseas with both. but not sure which order he served with them. Is it Henry Nichols Mike Edit Sorry missed Craig's post, and he knows a bit more about it than me.

Guest Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 Cheers guys, that is the correct Henry Nichols. He arrived in around August 1917 would he have been with the 1/7th Battalion and then moved on to the 1/6th or been moved from base camp in your opinion ? rolt968 Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 I'm not 100% sure that the medal rolls are always consistent about the order of units. There is certainly a way it should have been done. One medal roll I've read contains a copy of the instructions. However I have seen the odd one where the order might be reversed, though it may possibly have been Unit A, Unit B, then Unit A and the first Unit A service has been missed out of the list. Guest Posted 23 April , 2015 Share Posted 23 April , 2015 I know that Henry was killed with the 1/6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire. But interested to know why the 1/7th Battalion is mentioned.
