Hi, I have my grandfathers original service record and I am trying to understand more detail about his postings. He was Frederick Ewence and he served RMLI Portsmouth. Under the company column it says he enlisted and trained at Deal under B company. When he transferred to Portsmouth it looks like it says "G" company Portsmouth Division but I can't see that there was a G company in June 1915. Also his Division is then listed as Victory RM Brigade. I know HMS Victory can commonly be known as being based at Portsmouth but clearly he was serving in the Dardanelles for some of this time so I don't know what the Victory RM Brigade refers to. Is it possible to identify from this record where in the Dardanelles he was serving and what he was doing before he joined 3rd RM Battalion? What was happening at Stavros that it is noted on his record that he served there? Any help or ideas much appreciated.

G Company Portsmouth Division looks correct. VICTORY was the pay and admin office for all men serving in the RM Brigade of the Royal Naval Division (RND). He would have served in an RND reserve battalion at Blandford before going to Gallipoli with a reinforcement draft in September 1915. He would have joined the 2nd RM Battalion (2/RMLI) RND ashore at Gallipoli for four months. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, some of the RND Battalions were sent to Stavros for a couple of months on the Salonika front before transferring to the BEF in May 1916. Probably after a short spell in France, he served with 3rd RM Battalion in the Lemnos (Aegean)Garrison for the rest of the war.
