midshipmanrayley Posted 19 April , 2015 Share Posted 19 April , 2015 Arthur Guy Fane Griffinhoofe, 1892-1976, served as 2nd Lieutenant Leicestershire Regiment possibly in 8th battalion. Commissioned 26th April 1917. Found a forum mention of Arthur from August 2005 which mentions a Military Cross award although I cannot confirm or find a Gazette notification. I also cannot find a medal index card entry for him. Can any member please help?

Loader Posted 19 April , 2015 Share Posted 19 April , 2015 Re: MIC, with that last name you need to try all kinds of combos spelling as it is certainly a prime candidate for being spelled wrong & filed as such. Good luck!
midshipmanrayley Posted 20 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 20 April , 2015 Thank you IPT, Mike and loader. Tried every combination of forenames, surnames, ranks etc to search for a medal index card without success. Arthur was a playwright and Jessie Hitter his wife an actress. I understand that officers had to apply for their medals whereas other ranks didn't. Perhaps in the after war malaise he just didn't bother to apply? CGM Posted 20 April , 2015 Share Posted 20 April , 2015 ............... Perhaps in the after war malaise he just didn't bother to apply? This had occured to me. I was interested to see that he was playwright. Are you aware that he left Liverpool for Beunos Aires on 9th April 1915? He was aged 22 and his occupation was described as Theatrical. A total of 10 passengers gave Theatrical as their occupation. An 11th passenger was the wife of one. (No occupation).* CGM
CGM Posted 20 April , 2015 Share Posted 20 April , 2015 *And I do believe that this couple were Stanley (A) Holloway and his first wife Alice. CGM To be confirmed..... Edit - from Wiki: In the early months of 1914, Holloway made his first visit to the US and then went to Buenos Aires and Valparaíso with the concert party The Grotesques. At the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, he decided to return to the UK, but his departure was delayed for six weeks due to his contract with the troupe. At the age of 25, Holloway enlisted in the Connaught Rangers.
midshipmanrayley Posted 20 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 20 April , 2015 Thanks for your input CGM. Arthur's wife was Jesse Rose Susan Hitter 1895-1985 and they married in London 1920. She appeared in the 1930 film "Amateur Night in London".
