AndrewFrench Posted 18 April , 2015 Share Posted 18 April , 2015 Hi Terry Thanks for letting us know. Trooper Odell 1/1st Berkshire Yeomanry will also be commemorated on the "Trooper Potts VC£ memorial which will be unveiled on Sunday 4th October 2015 in Reading. Along with the statue is a roll of honour cast in bronze honouring the 426 Berks Yeomen who gave their lives on active service. N.B. Odell served in the same troop as Fred Potts. WilliamRev Posted 18 April , 2015 Share Posted 18 April , 2015 Pte. Peter GREIG 15882, 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers has always been in Soldiers Died, (at some point his name may have been confused with another Peter Greig of the Royal Scots Fusiliers who died exactly four months later in Gallipoli), and I notice that his name does not appear on the photos of the Menin Gate Royal Scots Fusiliers panels I took in 2014. I now see on the CWGC website that his name has been inscribed on an addenda panel on the Gate, which is good news. William
HeatherC Posted 18 April , 2015 Share Posted 18 April , 2015 Thank you so much for your help in getting James Wilfred Ollerenshaw on the way to full commemoration Terry. The original research on him was carried out by several members of our Chalford Great War Research Group and not just by me. We are so pleased to get him on the database before the 100th anniversary of his death and hope to see the full CWGC entry for him including details of the local grave in due course. Thanks once again for the excellent work that you and the IFCP team continue to do.

PaulC78 Posted 19 December , 2021 Share Posted 19 December , 2021 On 17/04/2015 at 17:08, Terry Denham said: - Pte Odell died post-discharge of tuberculosis (Volunteer: Terry Denham) Just curious about Odell, the shape of the headstone looks slightly off even for a non-war grave. Is that an unofficial headstone made to look like a proper CWGC one? Or was this previously a non-war grave in CWGC care? See topic on WW2Talk forums and compare with others from WW2: http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/cwgc-headstone-not-on-website-6344308-cpl-f-mitchell.91382/#post-944934 Also on Find-a-Grave; https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/33675717/joseph-william-odell
Terry Denham Posted 20 December , 2021 Author Share Posted 20 December , 2021 Paul It is a NWW pattern headstone of the type supplied by CWGC rather than by MoD. The slight difference is to the curve at the top which is the same as a War Grave stone but with clipped corners. An MoD supplied NWW stone would have a double curve plus the clipped corners (except RAF which do not have the clipped corners). CWGC will supply a NWW stone of this pattern when the NWW grave is in one of their cemeteries or plots or they care for the grave for aesthetic or other reasons. There are a number of varieties of NWW stones all with different pattern tops each with its own significance.
PaulC78 Posted 20 December , 2021 Share Posted 20 December , 2021 So this was a NWW grave prior to him being accepted as a casualty? Obviously there's no reason for him to have one now. It was the clipped corners that caught my eye, on this stone they appear to be cut at a 90 degree angle, whereas on a normal NWW stone thay are angled downwards. I've mostly only seen them for WW2 though.
Terry Denham Posted 20 December , 2021 Author Share Posted 20 December , 2021 Paul That is the CWGC-provided NWW style. See below for the variations.
PaulC78 Posted 20 December , 2021 Share Posted 20 December , 2021 I'm familiar with all of the above, however this looks different to my eyes:
Terry Denham Posted 20 December , 2021 Author Share Posted 20 December , 2021 Probably produce privately rather than to the usual specs. I have the blueprints for these stones as given to stonemason by the authorities and that one doesn't match any. Lokks like a bit of private enterprise which is not unknown.
