Loads of references to this regular soldier who rose from being a CSM with the RWF to command of 6th Cheshires (and others) but none I've found give his first names. Anyone know?

William Henry Stanway was born in 1881, in Lancashire and died in 1961, at Natal, South Africa. There is a fair collection of material,

including photos and MICs, on Ancestry.com confirming this is the RWF man. The Ancestry material includes the London Gazette

listing cited by Harry Brook. As is typical for Great War record keeping, the Ancestry material gives his birthdate, variously, as 1881 or 1882, but 1881 is on his gravestone.

FreeBMD has 2 listings for William Henry Stanway between 1880 & 1885.

One during September Quarter of 1882 at West Derby, Lancashire (actually most of northern part of Liverpool)

and one during the December Q of 1882 in Manchester.
