Hi, it's been a while since I've been on here but my grandad has been researching two men as part of a family history project and he needed a bit of help. The two men are William Brennand 202342 of the 11th border regiment and his brother in law Robert Henry Mallinson 43031 of 16th manchester regiment. Brennand died on the 1st october 1917 and his brother in law on the 25th September 1917. Only a few days apart. I've been trying to find out where at what they were doing when they were killed. But haven't been very successful. Wondering if anyone else had any information ? Many thanks

Hi Danielle,

Robert Mallinson 43031 died of wounds, 2nd Australian CCS, OUTTERSTEENE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, BAILLEUL. Will have been wounded in 3rd Battle of Ypres. Formerly 16336 in 11th Border Regiment with whom he entered France 23/11/1915. I think the Regimental Number fits with allocation to Manchesters transferred in Late Summer 1916. May have been attached before though. Left Effects to his mother.

Suggest you try http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php for some more detail.

Hi,

By your topic title do you mean soldiers from the old English county of Westmorland?

Danielle

I can't help a great deal but did find an entry for William Brennand on the Register of Soldiers' Effects on ancestry, which appears to say that he also died of wounds, rather than being killed in action. Unfortunately, it is badly indexed as "William Beennard" so here is a link in case you haven't yet seen the entry.

Danielle,

Robert was included in the wounded list for 22/9/1917 in A Coy. 43048 Pte Higgins was the only other member of A Coy wounded that day. Possible mate?

Witschaete Trenches. Relieved 19th KLR 20/9/17. A Coy Left disposition on 22nd.

Wow. Where do you find details like that? That's brilliant thank you. I'll give my grandad that information and see if he has encountered the name Higgins in his research. That's really interesting

I've just passed on the information so far and he's chuffed to bits. The lady he is researching for is Roberts niece. Thanks so much for the information so far. Been looking through the border regiment book with no avail. Not much information for end of 1917. Thanks to all that have helped!

Dannielle,

The details are from the 16th Manchesters War Diary. This has more details of men who were casualties than the others I've picked up. Great value @ £3.30 and I thoroughly recommend you see if National Archives have digitised the 11th Border's yet.

Cheers

Tim
