duncanpowell Posted 16 April , 2015 Share Posted 16 April , 2015 I am trying to find out more about my great uncle Ernest Cooper Powell 1338 RAMC Corporal. It seems he transferred to RAF? Also a mention of a commission in 7th Liverpools? If anyone can tell me more I'd be very grateful! With thanks in anticipation, Duncan Powell (KLR Grandson)

woollamc Posted 16 April , 2015 Share Posted 16 April , 2015 The Medal Rolls confirm that Ernest Cooper Powell went to France on 7 October 1914 as a Corporal (service number 1338) and served with the 6th Cavalry Field Ambulance of the RAMC (Territorial Force) before being commissioned in the Liverpool Regiment on 31 July 1917 - although there is a note on the British War and Victory Medal roll that the issue of his medals was being administered by the Air Ministry. Not only entitled to a 1914 Star but also the clasp & rose. C
duncanpowell Posted 16 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 16 April , 2015 Thank you so much for this. What do the clasp and rose signify? Gallantry or rank, something else? Thanks again, Duncan
Admin Michelle Young Posted 16 April , 2015 Admin Share Posted 16 April , 2015 Clasp and Rose signify he was one of the Old Contemptibles, ie was in range of enemy fire between August and November 1914 Michelle

Coldstreamer Posted 16 April , 2015 Share Posted 16 April , 2015 it also means he or someone bothered to request the clasp and roses - plenty didnt but are never the less deserving of them

I'd love to track his movements more closely. Any pointers gratefully received, from his RAMC years 1914-17 and his subsequent commissions to KLR and RAF. Many thanks, Duncan

Glen Posted 17 April , 2015 Share Posted 17 April , 2015 Thank you Glen for going to this trouble, I will use this in my continuing research, Duncan Duncan No trouble at all. This link will take to a search of the London Gazette from Aug 4th 1914 to Dec 31st 1920 for your man. There are 36 entries with that name and initials and some of them will be a different E.C Powell, so you will need to be careful in your research to ensure you are recording the correct man. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-notices/notice?end-publish-date=1920-12-31&text=%22E+C+Powell%22&start-publish-date=1914-08-04&location-distance-1=1&categorycode-all=all&numberOfLocationSearches=1&results-page-size=10 Glen
