Occupation Force

It has to be said that the situation in 1919 is very complex, as battalions were sent home for disbandment and sometimes replaced by others. For instance, 12th East Surrey from 41st Division was replaced by 9th East Surrey from 24th Division at the end of March, giving up 9 officers and 300 men to 9th Battalion. 41st Division was renamed the London Division. 9th East Surrey returned to England in November 1919.

With the Armistice, private cameras were now permitted and numbers of private photos of the troops on the Rhine survive.

With the Germans reluctantly signing the Peace Treaty in June 1919, the Rhine Army was reduced- to 6 divisions in August and then to 5 brigades that autumn.

(See regimental histories and Edmonds 'The Occupation of the Rhineland.')
