what were mines made of question

Hello all,

I found a description of a German mine discovered by 172nd Tunnelling Company as being made of"moped Robbie powder and lignite"

I was wondering, was lignite a powdered coal explosive? And Robbie powder? Moped?

Its an obscure question, but I know the forum has some particular specialists in this field.

As you, imply Lignite is a form of coal. It seems an odd choice because it can be very unstable. Maybe the Germans used it because that it what was available to them. Remember the Royal Navy blockade was very effective at cutting Germany off from the rest of the world.
