quemerford Posted 15 April , 2015 Share Posted 15 April , 2015 Can anyone advise what the German naval vessel described in Red Cross documents as 'SMT S.20' was? The ship (I assume) was assigned to II Z.Flotilla - or so the Red Cross POW documents state. I'd also appreciate any information regarding the capture of its crew. Many thanks in advance. trajan Posted 15 April , 2015 Share Posted 15 April , 2015 Can anyone advise what the German naval vessel described in Red Cross documents as 'SMT S.20' was? Well, as SM is presumably for 'Seiner Majestät', as in 'His Majesty's', I'd guess that the T is Torpedofahrzeug, and so His Majesty's Torpedo boat? quemerford Posted 15 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 15 April , 2015 Trajan - thanks for that: I did wonder, but couldn't find references to anything other than 'SMS'. So can anyone advise on how/where/when SMT-20 was captured?
trajan Posted 15 April , 2015 Share Posted 15 April , 2015 Hmmm - you might have to follow this through Google Deutsch... I don't have time now but there are several pages on Torpedo boats there, and this one, on the Großes Torpedoboot, at: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gro%C3%9Fes_Torpedobootseems to indicate that the 'T' designation comes in during 1917 for what were 'G' class boats - "1917 wurden der Kennbuchstabe aller Boote bis G 197 unabhängig von der Bauwerft auf T geändert." Can't help any more right now, I'm afraid... But this page and the links to others for the lighter versions (e.g., Liste deutscher Großer Torpedoboote (1898–1919) and Liste deutscher Torpedoboote (1871–1919) do seem pretty detailed!
