Mangoman Posted 14 April , 2015 Share Posted 14 April , 2015 Francis James Gallop attested as 37107 Private in the Devonshire Regiment on 23rd. August 1916 and the following day was transferred to the Army Pay Corps on health grounds. He never served abroad and I can find no reference to him being awarded either the War or Victory medals. As he did not serve abroad does this mean that he wasn't entitled to these medals as I am unable to fins a MIC for him.

Ron Clifton Posted 14 April , 2015 Share Posted 14 April , 2015 Hello Dee The short answer is that he wouldn't have been entitled to the BWM or VM. Some men who served only in the UK were so entitled, but they were in coast defences and possibly in AA units. Ron
bill24chev Posted 14 April , 2015 Share Posted 14 April , 2015 Victory and War medals required service overseas, and I believe in an operational area or at sea and in the air but based in UK 1914 to 1918. There are some slightly different rules for some service in India and Russia in 1919/20 So no medals for APC in UK For similer WW2 service the Defence Medal was awarded primarily because for UK was subject to air attack. although this was also true of WW1
