Angela R. Posted 12 April , 2015 Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Could anybody help identify the badge on the cap of this soldier. I've been looking through old family photos trying to find a photo of my great grandfather who served with the Sherwood Foresters, Notts. and Derby Regiment. Rank - Private. I have no idea who the man in this photo is so any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.
squirrel Posted 12 April , 2015 Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Looks like a King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry cap badge.
Angela R. Posted 12 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Thank you. Not the man I'm looking for unfortunately but good to know. Much appreciated.
Steven Broomfield Posted 12 April , 2015 Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Don't think so: too big. The KOYLI badge is very small - this looks too large. The angle distorts it something rotten, but something like Shropshire or Durham LI is a possibility.
Sepoy Posted 12 April , 2015 Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Looks like a King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry cap badge. The cap badge is surmounted with a King's Crown so is not KOYLI (or KSLI for that matter). Personally, without a closeup scan of the cap, I would go for the Durham Light Infantry. It is a shame that there are no shoulder titles on his great coat. Sepoy

Angela R. Posted 12 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Thank you all for your input. The photo is in an album that belonged to my grandfather. I know he was in Cairo/Egypt in the 1920's so the photo may have been of one of his friends. I was hoping it was his father who fought in WW1 with the Sherwood Foresters. Angela R. Posted 12 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 12 April , 2015 Could it possibly be The Duke of Wellington's Regiment? I've just found 2 photos of headstones in the same album that say 2nd Bn The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Killed in ambush 28-1-24. The names on the headstones are C.S.M. P. Walker No. 4603336 and COMS P. Dunn No. 4602030. Not necessarily the same men of course, but it may be a clue. The headstones also say Erected by his Comrades. There are photos in the album from Cairo, Port Said, The Nile and Singapore but I don't know where the graves are located.

FROGSMILE Posted 13 April , 2015 Share Posted 13 April , 2015 It's a large crown on the badge and I agree looks more like the DLI than any of the others mentioned. There is something odd about it though.
sgt-maj Posted 9 May , 2015 Share Posted 9 May , 2015 Gentlemen.... the chap in question is a member of the yeomanry cavalry... The Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars.. to be more precise. There are three cap badges in use concurrently for this regiment, two with King's crown, and one with an Imperial crown.... the latter version of which is being worn.
