Further to my previous post I also have this photograph of my grandfather front right but this time he has a different cap badge which I can't make out. They all have shoulder badges which he doesn't and all have lanyards which he doesn't. The two cap badges at the back could be Glamorgan Yeomanry but he and the man front left have dark badges which are round but I can't make out any detail. Also the photograph shows the top of a round plate with a name on it. Having searched the internet I wondered if this could be Fernhill which I understand was a military hospital in Lancashire. Bearing in mind his record shows Glamorgan Yeomanry 2562, South Wales Borderers 39650, The Kings Liverpool Regiment ? and the Labour Corps 131744 - any ideas on the cap badge or the place? I also notice that in this picture he doesn't have the three overseas service chevrons on his right sleeve.

Thanks in anticipation

John

This picture most likely predates the other one due to the lack of the overseas chevrons.

The cap badge also looks like the Glamorgan yeomanry which makes it earlier in his service.

The picture is reminiscent of a pre-war camp photo with the sign probably showing their unit or something like a sporting award.

Actually looking at it again from the computer this time, rather than my phone, the front left cap badges look like a SWB badge, the back 2 look like Yeomanry badges. I wonder if it it was taken around the time the men were moved to the SWB which could explain the mixed badges.

Under canvas indicates a training camp in summer rather than a hospital. I think the last poster is correct and it is the transitional period between yeomanry and infantry. They are probably brushing up their infantry training.

It could well be at the time he was transferred from the Yeomanry to the SW Borderers and some still had Yeomanry badges on.

Thanks, John

Looking at the records of another 3 men who was transferred from the Glamorgan Yeomanry to the 2nd SWB the transfer happened on 27/28 Sep 1916. The men I looked at were already in France at the time, having been arrived at the 6th Infantry Base Depot, Rouen, from the 3/1 Yeomanry on 17 Sep 1916..

One record notes what appears to be an administrative move to the '4th T.F. Res. Bn' of the SWB prior to being posted to the 2nd Bn.

A TF Res Batt makes sense for the tented picture. Res Batts fed drafts of replacements to the frontline battalions.

Thanks very much for the info. Apart from the pictures and his discharge to reserve I don't have any other documentation so it's great to be able to get any information from the members on this forum.

Thanks again

John

Out of interest where do you get these records from.

The trick is to look for sImilar numbers on FindMyPast and find men who made the same transition between battalions - they're quite often part of a large batch of men so the journery of one reflects the rest.

Hello John,

I have just posted on your other part of this thread about your granddad being a POW and also where to go to see it.

I have also sent you a PM as well.

Cheers Roger.
