Bear in mind that, at some time in the past, the family were not sufficiently fussed to keep it in their possession. You might find one of Holt's descendents and it it over to her/him and then find they've promptly flogged it again.

oh ok thank you all. I feel that i dont want to flog it ...or hand it over to be flogged.. if that makes any sense.I feel that he paid a price way to high just to gain money from his life.. think i might have to keep it .. its not up for sale...

Hi,

What is irrelevant to one generation may be of great interest to the next who do not have memories or a direct link. There is also the possibility, as has been found in several previous threads, that the medal was stolen or lost rather than disposed of.

I recently bought a WW1 photograph from a car boot with a penciled name on the back. A quick search on Ancestry popped up a picture of the same man in civies.

Two messages later and the picture is going home in the post to an appreciative Great grandson.

Guy.

If the family are traceable, you would then need to consider which family member should be the beneficiary of the medal...........especially as the extended family may be widespread and there may be more than one member with a keen interest in all thing 'Great War'.

I took a medal group in my possession to a cemetery in Champagne, and photographed it. Posted it, found a site where he was remembered - and got in contact with the family. The communication and circumstances were such I gave the group to the family free of charge.

This I would not do as a rule. You will know when it is the right thing to do.

Do we know which medal is being referred to ?

From a ££ perspective the range is from £10 and up , best to check before disposing.

Why not just keep it as you are clearly interested in it, that's the best memorial to him , not to forget

Hi,

These are the two images from ancestry re his medals……..can't see a service / pension / death record.

Had a look at the Ben Holt from Tregdegar that rjaydee mentioned above….. not sure this is the right guy as although he was in the Royal Welsh Regiment his service number was 18696, not 47881……( unless there was a change of service number for some reason??)

Hi Thanks for the medal cards. looks like this might be the right one. for Pte Holt.

I also have another medal with no name on it but from ww1. on the back of this one it has, The Great war 1914 1918, Birmingham peace celebrations.

on the front it looks like the words say Pax Victoris but its hard to deceiver. could this belong to the same Solider maybe...

many thanks for you help. )

Hi,

The Birmingham peace medal was. I believe given to Birmingham school children after the Armistace. The legend pax victoris is Latin, peace in Victory.
