John Milner Posted 8 April , 2015 Share Posted 8 April , 2015 Jessie was born in 1854 and died in 1931, she served during the Boer War and was Mentioned in Despatches for her deeds during the Siege of Ladysmith. She volunteered for service at the age of 60 in 1914 and was turned down by the British military, however, she did serve with the French Red Cross, I have a photo of her Ministre de la Guerre armband from the local War Memorial Hospital, in various locations in France and Flanders and also in Serbia, Corfu and the Anglo Russian Hospital in Petrograd. I have copies of her service records and MiD entry etc from the RCN and Red Cross archives. This is an image of Sister Jessie Edith Borlase, can anyone identify the uniform, badge on the cape and badge hanging from waist belt, and have a stab at when the picture was taken please. rolt968 Posted 8 April , 2015 Share Posted 8 April , 2015 Just in case you haven't seen them, there are four file cards on the British Red Cross site: http://www.redcross.org.uk/About-us/Who-we-are/History-and-origin/First-World-War/Search?sname=Borlase RM
Sue Light Posted 8 April , 2015 Share Posted 8 April , 2015 The uniform and badge are of Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve. The PCANSR was the official Reserve for the British Army Nursing Service at the time and was active between 1897 and 1908, but I would think the photo was taken around the time of the Boer War when she served in South Africa.
