kloughnane Posted 5 April , 2015 Share Posted 5 April , 2015 Dear all, I am attempting to assist a friend whose grandfather served in the ASC during the First World War. The man concerned was Cyril Hugh Watkins and luckily his service record survives on Ancestry. According to the record he embarked Portsmouth 11.9.17. disembarked Rouen 14.9.17. Ex SS "Huntscape". 975 MT (Workshop) Coy. I have taken a look at The Long Long Trail but cannot seem to find 975 MT (Workshop) Coy listed. Does anybody have any idea as to where this company was and whether there are any diaries available to view? I am particularly interested as the service record states that he was mentioned in despatches and wondered if this may have been noted in the diary. Thank you. Thank you very much for the link, although it takes me to a page that tells me that I shall have to search the London Gazzette myself. They don't make things easy!! cathnl Posted 5 April , 2015 Share Posted 5 April , 2015 Could I please ask the same question for the 495th Aux M Co ASC.? I have a photo of the Company at Trowbridge before embarkation to France, and believe they also served in East Africa. Do they feature in Col Michael Young's book by any chance? Many thanks for any help.
michaeldr Posted 5 April , 2015 Share Posted 5 April , 2015 What Col. Young has on this company does not quite tie in here with the info which you already have ASC Co. 495 formed 11 August 1915 Absorbed into 585 MT Co. 12 March 1918 Served on Western Front in Fourth Army as 39 Ammunition Sub Park (MT) Later serving as 30 Auxiliary Petrol Company (MT) Young's table covering East Africa & Cameroons, West Africa does not mention this company If you want to chech the NA file for ASC Co. 495 then you will find it under ref WO95 512 Good luck Michael

Thank you, Regards, Kev Loughnane Hello Kev For MiDs, all the London Gazette will give you is a list of names, with regiment/corps and service number. There will be no citations, and probably no way of telling where or when the "mention" was earned, except that it will be during the period since the last despatch. These were normally published at around six-monthly intervals. Ron
kloughnane Posted 5 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 5 April , 2015 Ron, Thank you for the advice. I suppose that the only way forward now is to check the company war diaries to see if there is an entry there. Following johnboy's post I was able to see the LG entry dated 8th July 1919 so am guessing that it relates to something that happened very close to the armistice. And following Michael's post I now have the file reference for The National Archives. Guess I know what I am doing on Tuesday!! johnboy Posted 5 April , 2015 Share Posted 5 April , 2015 Q Ron For MiDs, all the London Gazette will give you is a list of names, with regiment/corps and service number It is good to let the OP see the mans name in writing and he has now learned these things were reported in the Gazette. When I suggested he might have to go to a previous page to see what the entry was for it was because the link I gave had no heading at the top of the page. All I have for two of my relatives are their MiC's and Medal Roll entries.

Would you be able to say which ASC companies served in East Africa? My grandfather was gassed, and then redeployed, so he may have changed company I suppose. His records do not seem to have survived. Is there a way of consulting NA records remotely? I live abroad. Thank you again for your help. Cathnl

MaureenE Posted 8 April , 2015 Share Posted 8 April , 2015 You possibly may find something of relevance in the online RLC [Royal Logistics Corps] Digital Library http://www.rlcarchive.org/Welcome.aspx Free to search, but pay to view. Includes a page ASC Companies in World War I (1914 - 1918) http://www.rlcarchive.org/ArmyServiceCorpsCoys.aspx Cheers Maureen
