Remembered Today:

9.2" gun piece, glass broken, made in cast iron

Hello,

Still one of that unknown, small pieces I still have laying here. See 2 added photo. It looks like a piece to have sight on something (oil, water level??).

Could it have been part of a 9.2" gun? Or of tooling belonging to the Howitzer?

Perhaps it is piece that they replaced and have thrown away because its glass was broken? Somebody has an idea what this might have been used for or have beenpart of? In each case nothing with big pressure on it, as the piece looks me to be made in casts iron.

There is also a part number (82402) of it which can be seen on the photo.

Curious which origin this might have? Thanks for any help given about origin of this mystery piece.

Regards, Marc

Does the reflected tape appearing in the lower picture indicate that a glass is intact? And is the item hollow ?

The item is indeed hollow, but now there is still rust in it. Indeed where the tape reflects, there is a glass plate. The glass itself is broken in 2 but is indeed still in position. Regards, Marc

Looks like a sight glass to check water flow, but beyond that.........?

Hi Mike, perhaps not to check flow as there is only 1 connection (so not real flow can be passing) with for instance the water. It could perhaps be something to let sink the dirt in oil or water and let if flow away (by unscrewing the little nut on underside) when too much dirt appears before the glass. Regards, Marc

Marc,

Yes, sorry thought there was a through flow, as you say may be a sink type filter.

The glass suggests that the item was meant to be looked at and that perhaps it was an indicator of some sort. Given some sort of spring and piston set up it might indicate that a particular pressure was exceeded or not being achieved. Such a device might have a place in a recoil system. I have very little knowledge of WW1 era systems, so this is not more than a passing idea.

Hi, I'm also thinking that way, but I'm not sure that this is part of the Howitzer itself. I was this week in IWM and could in each case not find this part back on the 9.2" Howitzer I saw there. Regards, Marc
