jainvince Posted 3 April , 2015 Share Posted 3 April , 2015 We have some information on this soldier but cannot find him on the CWGC website nor on SDGW. Can you assist, please? Our information is as follows:- "Official information was received weekending 28th April 1917 that 24 year old Corporal Thomas Hallworth, Border Regiment who had been posted missing since 28th March 1917 had been killed. He enlisted 4 years ago and lived at 116 Church Street, Littleborough. His brother Albert is in hospital in France". According to the 1911 Census the family were called Hallsworth and there was a Thomas plus an Alfred but no Albert! The Rochdale Observer for 3rd October 1914 reporting on members of the Church Lads Brigade who had joined up recorded a T Hallsworth, Border Regiment. The Rochdale Observer for 20th November 1915 published a list of the 'Holy Trinity Company, Littleborough, Church Lads Brigade' who had joined up which included Tom Hallsworth of the Indian Border Rifles. The Rochdale Observer also noted that there is a Tom Hallsworth on the Whitworth Roll of Honour. All of the above indicates there was a soldier called Hallsworth but he appears to have slipped through for some reason. And what were the Indian Border Rifles? Any thoughts or further information would be appreciated. Bernard

Glen Posted 3 April , 2015 Share Posted 3 April , 2015 Langdon was quicker than me!!Thomas Hallsworth, Born Littlebrough, 8.1.93, Son of Mrs Hallsworth, 116 Church St, Littleborough. It is possible that he was reported as died, but was later found to be a POW (There are numerous entries in the Soldiers effects register that are appended "Alive - POW" There is a Thomas Hallsworth who's death was registered in Rochdale in December 1956, who is the right age so may be worth looking at the papers around that time to see if there is an obituary for him.
