Guest WindsorMike Posted 2 April , 2015 Share Posted 2 April , 2015 My grandfather, Ernest George Staddon, who served in the 10th Bn Essex Regiment 35093, was a POW, suffered GSW to lower leg, and the Intl Red Cross Index shows him with reference to 4 documents, one of which gives Miraumont 8.3.17. Am I correct in assuming this was the date of his capture? I am confused as documents, including the CWGC site, seem to show that this area was captured by the Allies on 24-25 Feb 1917 after the Germans withdrew to the Hindenburg line. Was it retaken? I looked at the Adanac Military Cemetery on CWGC, and found that 7 members of the Essex Regt were killed, 1 on 7 March, 1 on 8 March & 5 on 10 March which seems to indicate hostilities still going on in Miraumont. Any explanations please?
sotonmate Posted 3 April , 2015 Share Posted 3 April , 2015 Miraumont was 17-18 Feb 1917,with 10 Essex being part of 18 Division in that action. Action at Irles, quite a short distance to the ENE of Miraumont, came on 10 March,so that between the two I am guessing that there may have been insufficient to distinguish one from the other as far as the Germans were concerned. Your man may have been taken as a POW then. The German retreat to the Hindenberg Line came in mid-March 1917.
