EXPERIENCE INTO IDENTITY: THE WRITINGS OF BRITISH CONSCRIPT SOLDIERS, 1916-1918
By Ilana Ruth Bet-El (Submitted for the degree of PhD University College London)

I came across this thesis (as a PDF file), whilst searching on the internet for the disinfectant used on clothing by the divisional baths and it is an absolutely goldmine of information. It is 321 pages of snippets of every day life and a must for anyone who has wondered exactly what was going on in the minds and lives of the men who served as conscripted soldiers.

Regards
Pompey

Ps the disinfectant was Cresol

Thanks for posting about this.

I would be interested in downloading a copy, but I seem to be getting an error page on the UCL link.

I assume you had success - any chance please you could post a link to the address from which you got it

Thanks

Hi Russ,

the file is 15.6MB in size, so it might take awhile to download, but it is worth the effort

It downloaded instantly onto my ageing IPad so I suspect it may be a software problem at your end, Russ. It came as a .tif file.

Just to note that Ilana Bet-el authored the book Conscripts. Forgotten Men of the Great War (Stroud, History Press 2009).
