catfishmo Posted 1 April , 2015 Share Posted 1 April , 2015 <Forgive me if this is a repeat topic, but I didn't see it when I did a search.> All five episodes of The Passing Bells mini series are on Youtube. I'm curious to get reactions to its historical accuracy. The main thing that stuck out to me was the lack of noise and shelling when they were in the trenches. Am I wrong in thinking there would have been shelling noise almost constantly? I never see men scratching in their uniforms and rarely do shows/movies have rats--both of which first hand accounts speak extensively of. Also, after the Somme, it looked like no one survived--every body on the battlefield looked dead. Although thousands died, an enormous number were wounded. On the positive side, it is my first 'exposure' to a German perspective. I find myself sympathizing with the German boy as much as the British one. One of the themes underscored by the show is that really they were all just men--humans who had the same hopes and dreams but just happened to live in different countries. I thought they also did a good job showing how the boys grew up in a hurry... which I imagine was common. Anyone want to chime in? Please be specific in your criticism and then note how it really was. ~Ginger
trenchtrotter Posted 6 April , 2015 Share Posted 6 April , 2015 Hi, it was covered when released on TV. Mixed reviews and some liked and some did not. Re accuracy well it was main stream TV and not for anoraks like me. IMHO it was OK at best with all the usual cliches and an awful end. Check out the original thread. When I originally searched to see if it had already been discussed I must have spelled the title wrong or something as I didn't see it. Now I see the original topic here. ~Ginger
