Hi,

Does anybody know what the "horseshoe" shape badge / insignia means (refers to) on the left shoulder of the two soldiers in the middle of the photo?

These are rank/trade badges indicating that they are Shoeing Smiths.

Edit: it's an APPOINTMENT badge, not a trade badge....! Although that would have been his trade, of course.....

Isn't that a senior appointment to Shoeing Smith, and therefore likely to be a sergeant or similar....?

Except in the ASC, farriers were normally sergeants and shoeing-smiths were corporals and below.

Note to Household Cavalry buffs: I know! :lol:

There were also a few farrier staff sergeants and warrant officers.
