Yorke Scarlett Posted 31 March , 2015 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2015 Dave, Thanks for that - interesting about transfer to Manchesters. Maybe Mr Hartley can shed a little more light on this one. I have his medals 15 Star/WM/VM/WW2 DM/Police medal Thanks again Dave
8055Bell Posted 31 March , 2015 Share Posted 31 March , 2015 Hi Wayne, The 43384 Manchesters number fits in with the group of men attached to the 90th Brigade (16th-18th) in mid July 1916, prior to the assault on Guillemont on 29th. Men from numerous Regiments were attached to the Manchesters at Etaples then and transferred on 1/9/1916. There was a particularly large draft of men from the Royal Berks who fit this profile attached to 17th Bttn. By the look of the MIC (1914/15 Star), we can speculate Frederick was returning to the front after a stay at Home, probably wounded. I'll see if I have anything further tonight. 8055Bell Posted 31 March , 2015 Share Posted 31 March , 2015 Frederick William Arthur Newing, BWM/VM Roll relates to 17th Manchesters (90th Bgd). He is square in the draft of men where similarly numbered service records show the transfer 1/9/1916 after attachment on 11-16th July. Cheers Tim Edit for dates of drafts courtesy John Hartley
Yorke Scarlett Posted 31 March , 2015 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2015 Thanks Tim, That would put Fred just down the road from me on 31st July 1917. Amazing.
John_Hartley Posted 31 March , 2015 Share Posted 31 March , 2015 17/Manc received drafts on 11/7, 12/7, 15/7 & 16/7. Tim's research indicates that he must have been one of the 12/7 men. I've never analysed these groups so have nothing to add. John
