Second Lt Herbert Lewis

Hi everyone, new man here ******Imformation required please*********

My great uncle Second Lt Herbert Lewis of the Royal Army Service Corps died on the 5th May 1917 in the Mediterranean on board a ship we think was the SS Transylvania. His name appears on the Dorian Memorial in Greece along with other members of the ASC, his medal card simply says "Salonica" and "mining" but no mention of any ship. I can't find any list of those who died on the Transylvaia that day or any other ship he may have been on when he died.

Can anyone help me locate any further records???

Your Great Uncle was in 917 Company, ASC and there is a service record on Ancestry for Pte Ernest Griffiths from the same company, who also drowned on 5 May 1917 and is commemorated at Doiran. According to Griffiths' service papers, he left Avonmouth aboard HMT Harmattan which was torpedoed off the coast of Algeria by a U boat on 5 May 1917.

Working backwards from this, there is an earlier thread of the Forum (here) relating to this which refers to your Great Uncle.

I hope this helps.

Hi Andrew - and welcome to the Forum.

If you can get to the National Archives at Kew, I would think he would have an officer's file. These are not digitised yet and it means a personal visit. I'm afraid I'm hopeless at navigating the system when it comes to officers' papers and always have to ask for help in getting the references.

If you can't get to Kew yourself, I'll be there at the end of May and would be happy to order up the file.
