Ron Clifton Posted 28 March , 2015 Share Posted 28 March , 2015 It was intended, once Turkey joined the war, to keep a sizeable Imperial force in Egypt, both to protect the Suez Canal and to provide a general strategic reserve. This route suited the Australians and New Zealanders better than it did the Canadians, say, whom geography dictated would cross the Atlantic to the UK and then to France.
