pgknowles Posted 21 March , 2015 Share Posted 21 March , 2015 Hello, Can anyone help? I am trying to find any information about a nurse, Sister Rhoda Mary Price who served in France between January and July 1916. She was awarded the British War and Victory medals together with the French commemorative war medal and a French Red Cross medal. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. royalredcross Posted 22 March , 2015 Share Posted 22 March , 2015 If she has the British War and Victory medals, she will have a medal card at the NA.. This might indicate the unit she served with. NGG

I have a copy of the medal index card which shows entitlement to the BWM and VM, and also states: 'French Red Cross' Regards Paul
royalredcross Posted 25 March , 2015 Share Posted 25 March , 2015 What is the exact reference on the card. It should look something like BRX/***** This may well indicate her unti. NGG
Sue Light Posted 25 March , 2015 Share Posted 25 March , 2015 I can see that her medals have been sold recently and assume that Paul was the buyer? Because the dates of service were quoted in the first post I assumed that maybe the medal roll had already been seen. But anyway ... she served at the Edinburgh and Border Hospital, the dates of her service being given as January to July 1916. This fits in exactly with the move of the E & B from it's original site at Malo-les-Bain to Paris, as at the beginning of January it moved to the Pavilion Royal in the Bois de Boulogne. Full details in Laurence Binyon's 'For Dauntless France' now available online. Sue

Sue Hi Sue, Many thanks for this information, I have indeed just bought the medal group hoping to find the story behind the medals. I'm delighted with your and NGG's response it is very kind of you both to spend the time. I will look for 'For Dauntless France', is there anything else you could tell me about Rhoda? Kind regards Paul

Sue Light Posted 26 March , 2015 Share Posted 26 March , 2015 I can't see any record of a nurse by that name in any other sources I have here. She might well have moved on to another unit, but there's no way of telling, or even left and married around that time. There don't seem to be any surviving records of members sent out by the British Committee of the French Red Cross, so hard to find out more via official records. The pages you want in the original of the book that refer to the Edinburgh and Border are 136. 160 and 327, which hopefully are the same in the online edition. Sue Hi Sue, I have found the pages which certainly shed a good deal of light on Rhoda's service. I'm extremely grateful for your, and all forum members advice and time. Any other thoughts or leads would be marvellous. Paul

Paul Hi Sue, How did you find out that Rhoda had served at the Edinburgh and Border Hospital? Her Medal Index Card states: FRX/101B2. does this indicate the hospital? Many thanks, Paul
Sue Light Posted 30 March , 2015 Share Posted 30 March , 2015 Hello Paul I've photographed that particular medal roll in the past and have also indexed that and several others. Here's the section of the page to which your card refers - I've had to crop it to fit, but there are no other comments on the right-hand side of the page. You'll notice that all the pages have the hospital named on the left-hand top of the page. The reference is TNA WO329/2323 page 68.
royalredcross Posted 30 March , 2015 Share Posted 30 March , 2015 Yes, the second part of the FRX reference is the page number in the medal roll. In the majority of cases, this will indicate the unit without having to go to the actual roll. This is why I asked you for the exact reference. Pages 67 and 68 are the Edinburgh and Border Hospital. But Sue has the whole roll and got there before me. Norman
