It looks as if these checks are to be introduced for everybody leaving the UK, whatever route they go.

This seems in line with air travel and if details registered in advance all goes smoothly.

What a load of hype about nothing. In my very long experience, the first thing they do on check-in for trains and ferries is to demand ID cards or passports.

They already have all the info that the spying state wants. Why do they need to do it again?

I did wonder when I saw the date it's being introduced.

How does it stop people hiding in lorries to get out of the country if they don't want to feature on the border checks?

If they can do that to get IN then surely they can do so to get OUT?

Isn't this just the same as the checks at airports where everyone is supposed to take off shoes, belts and everything out of their pockets, then you see those 3 girls going through without having to do so.....? Maximise the inconvenience for the maximum number of people for the minimum of idiots. It already takes us longer to get on an aircraft than the flight, and a similar delay to get out of the terminal at the destination. Trouble is, it does only take one idiot....

There were no checks of any sort at Dover a week ago and none on entry into France either. At Calais the other day the French police weren't bothering with passports but the UK border control was scanning every passport. Nothing on entry into Dover, as usual.

In my experience the French very rarely do anything at Dover except wave you through.

Its the British who are hysterical about checking.

What is nice is that on the last two occasions I have gone into Dover, the Customs shed has been barred off and there is a new road that circumvents the whole place. I wonder whether the Customs have yet noticed?

Then there is the overwhelming experience of the self-appointed ,Dover Security' composed of people who are either on work experience or are unemployable (one woman once asked me, "how long are you leaving the country for, dearie?" I replied that actuarially about 25 years or so, if she meant Britain to be THE country.

She had no idea what I was talking about. As i was driving a left hand drive car not registered in Britain, it should have been obvious.

Then there was the young girl who said she was searching for an atom bomb! I asked her whether she had ever seen one. "No", she replied, "Have you".

"I used to work with them. Your turn".

We had an Edwardian dining table and 6 chairs squashed into the back of our 4x4, the customs lackey at Dover pointed and asked 'what's that?'.

I think I have read somewhere that this new rule, which was to be introduced on the 1st of April is now to commence on the 8th of April, because it might be busy over Easter!

And what about people coming into the country? Don't the officials want to know who they are?

From the Eurotunnel FAQs it states that API will "speed up your journey through our Folkestone terminal". But if you have not given the information before arriving at Folkestone there seems to be no facility to put this right, So this should read that API will permit your journey through our Folkestone terminal.

There will be tears.

You should have said "It's an atom bomb" .... but then you'd have got arrested for setting of a bomb scare!

Tempting, but from experience I am very wary of making humorous or sarcastic remarks to people in ill fitting uniform matched with training shoes who need little encouragement to make your life as miserable as theirs.

Not tempting at all! I was with a colleague who made such a comment at the eurotunnel terminal in France. I think we missed two shuttles whilst they "took the car to bits".

They do know who you are when you return from France as everyone has to have a their passport checked by UKBA that is if you are travelling legally and not a stowaway

How can they? The people they want to know who they are travel in sealed 40 foot containers
